Fred's Story

Fred Oris Cooper, 96, of Westport, passed away at 3:45 p.m. on Monday, December 25, 2017 at his residence. He was born February 9, 1921 in Bartholomew County, the son of Walter S. and Ora Ethel (Updike) Cooper. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1939 and has been a Decatur County resident since 1950. Fred was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed bird hunting and mowing. He was a member of the Waynesburg Christian Church and Hope Masonic Lodge # 150 F. & A.M. He married Marjory Elizabeth Bokelman on April, 21 1940 in Merom, Indiana and she survives. Other survivors include his daughters, Anna Marie Shipley of Plainfield and Pamela Kay (Max) Taylor of Marion; sons, Michael F. (Marilyn) Cooper and Randal Kent (Pamela) Cooper both of Hartsville; 12 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lela Quinn, Zelma Kelly, Isabelle Romine and Vivian Cooper; and a brother, Teford Cooper. The funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Waynesburg Christian Church with Rev. David Burnett officiating. Burial will follow at the Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus. A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport.
