Gladys Mae (Thorp) Davis, 91, of Greensburg, passed away Friday, April 14, 2017, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
She was born in Shelby County on May 23, 1925, to Forrest Hardy Thorp and Ethel (Alley) Thorp. She married John W. Davis on December 16, 1945, and he survives. Other survivors include daughter Joyce (William) Crane of Milroy, Ind.; daughter, Cheryl (Kenneth) Bass of Shelbyville,Ind; son, Gary (Debra) Davis of St. Paul, Ind.; and daughter-in-law, Kathie Davis of Greensburg,Ind. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Stephen Davis; one sister, Marian Wiley; and daughter-in-law, Cindy Davis.
She was a lifetime resident of the area. Gladys was a homemaker and school teacher for many years working in Edinburgh, Hauser, and Flat Rock Schools.
She graduated from Waldron High School and also Indiana University.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of Shelbyville. Gladys was a 4-H leader for 15 years and also played trumpet in the Shelby County Farm Bureau Band.
Gladys and John were married for 71 happy years. She loved helping John on the farm and fixing meals for all the workers. She loved gardening, canning, baking, sewing, and traveling.
Services will be held at the Glenn E. George Funeral Home in St. Paul on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Bill Horner officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, from 4-7 p.m. and from 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday until the time of service. Burial will be at Van Pelt Cemetery in St. Paul.
