Helen's Story

Helen Frances Fletcher, 86, of Greensburg passed away on Friday, January 26, 2018 at Aspen Place in Greensburg. She was born on September 3, 1931 in Greensburg, the daughter of Willard O. and Florence Z. (Rork) Buell. Helen was a 1949 graduate of Greensburg High School, where she received a full academic scholarship to attend nursing school. She left after one year to marry and raise a family. Once her children were raised, she returned to her nursing studies, where she graduated from Indiana University School of Nursing with High Distinction in 1977. She married Ralph (Izzy) Newman in 1950 and they were married for 32 years. Helen later married Jack F. Fletcher on January 23, 1988, and he preceded her in death on August 10, 2012. She worked as an RN at the Decatur County Memorial Hospital and Greensburg Medical Group. Helen was a member of the Clarksburg Christian Church.
Survivors include: her children- Steven G. Newman of Winchester, VA; Dr. Joel P. Newman of Jerusalem, Israel; and Leslie K. (Randy) Emerson of Noblesville, IN; step-children- John (Beth) Fletcher of Fishers, IN; Jayne (David) Schlemmer of Greensburg; and Jim (Nancy) Fletcher of Greensburg; 8 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings- Bertha L. Hess, Robert L. Buell, Charles Richard Buell, Loren Eugene Buell and Willard O. Buell, Jr., as well as one grandson.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 31 at 11.00 AM, also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jerran Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at South Park Cemetery.
