James Richard Rathburn, 89, of Greensburg, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017. He was born June 28, 1928, in Waldron, the son of Leonard and Mary (Childers) Lawrence.
James was a 1946 graduate of Greensburg High School. He retired as Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force after serving 26 years. He served at many posts as a radar technician for weather recon, including the D.E.W. (Distant Early Warning) line operating in Alaska during the Cold War.
On June 18, 1950, he married Sarah Ann Rathburn and together they had three children: Carol, Juanita, and Gary. James also retired from Delta after 17 years.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Rathburn; daughters, Carol Rathburn and Juanita (Dave, Sr.) Willard; son, Gary (Mary Rachael) Rathburn; aunt, Eunie King; sisters, Dee Nugent and Diane (Eddie) Fisher; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and two sisters.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 9 at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. Funeral services begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 10 at the funeral home with Rev. Terry Canfield officiating.
