James R. "Pinky" Thornburg, 87, Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2017, at MHP Medical Center. Born July 9, 1929, in Decatur County, he was the son of Russell and Ethel (Wiley) Thornburg.
He graduated from St. Paul High School in 1947.
He married Deloris (Bennett) Thornburg on June 25, 1949, and she passed away Dec. 21, 1994.
He then married Patricia M. Close on Aug. 28, 1999, and she passed on Feb. 6, 2010.
Mr. Thornburg lived in Shelbyville since 1971, having moved from St. Paul after 42 years.
He was a self-employed farmer and owned Thornburg Concessions for 40 years, retiring in 2006.
Survivors include his children, Alvin (Kathy) Thornburg of Dublin, Ohio, Danny "Smokey" Thornburg of Shelbyville, Jamey Thornburg of Shelbyville, Diane (Dan) Baldwin of St. Paul, Nancy (Brian) Hawkins of Jasper; sister, Evelyn Remmler of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Brad, Travis, Mark, Aaron, Samantha, Daniel, and Nick; great-grandchildren, Emily, Noelle, and Maxwell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two spouses; brothers, Charles and Max Thornburg; and special friend, Evelyn Anderson.
Pinky was a very casual person, and had requested that friends and acquaintances attend his visitation in casual "come as you are" attire.
Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3 at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amon Road. Funeral services begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 4 at the funeral home with Pastor Dawn Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in Union Chapel Cemetery in Decatur County.
