John J. Barnes, 85, of Laurel, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2017, in Greensburg. He was born Nov. 9, 1931, in Franklin County, to the late Jewel Donald Barnes and Nellie (Banks) Morford.
John married Evelyn (Baker) Barnes on Aug. 25, 1951, and she survives.
He was a member of Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
John was an equipment operator with Vanderbur Excavating for 19 years and helped to build Lake Santee. John was an avid outdoorsman and he loved to hunt.
Johnny is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn (Baker) Barnes of Laurel; son, Mike (Glenda Sue) Barnes of Rushville; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild. He was also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Johnny was preceded in death by his loving son, Donald W. Barnes; sisters, Sylvia Barnes, Lucy Barnes, Jane Morford, Wonda Morford; and brothers, Sheldon Morford and Jim Morford.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the start of funeral services at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, at Moster Mortuary in Rushville. Mike Coyle will officiate at the services. Burial will follow in Hopewell Cemetery in Rush County.
