John Hastings, 79, of Greensburg, passed away at 9:36 p.m. on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the Columbus Regional Hospital ER following complications from heart issues he had been battling. He was born on June 24, 1938 in Indianapolis. He was the son of Gene Francis and Louise (Biddle) Hastings. He graduated from Burney High School in 1957. He had worked for Central Engineering and was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Union Local 103. John enjoyed 4 wheel trips to Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia, riding his Harley, his UTV for poker runs, his dogs, watching the History and Discovery channels and mowing grass. He enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors and just being outdoors. He was a veteran having served with the U.S. Army, where he met his wife. After his years in the service, John returned home to do construction and work the family farm. He had spent a short while in the Gulf of Mexico on an oil rig, then came home and returned to being a heavy equipment operator and worked as a grader operator until his retirement. He married Waltraud Wally Fromm in Burney on November 6, 1960. John will be greatly missed by his wife of 57 years, his sons, Gene Hastings and Brian (Lori) Hastings both of Greensburg; his grandsons, Cody (Tearstin) Hastings, Wade Hastings, Cory Hastings and Austin Hastings all of Greensburg; his great granddaughters, Gemma and Paisley Hastings both of Greensburg; his sister, Linda Manuel of Greensburg; brother-in-law, John Bailey of Illinois and several nieces and nephews and 2 beloved boxers, Abby and Jack. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Judith Bailey. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 20, 2017 at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Pastor Mike Bartlett officiating. Burial will follow at the Westport Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held on Monday, November 20, 2017 from noon until service time at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
