L.'s Story

Mrs. L. Katherine "Katie" (Ragan) Ferguson, 93, of Madison, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, June 16, 2017, at River Terrace Health Campus, surrounded by her family. She entered this life May 21, 1924, in Cooker, Kentucky. She was the loving daughter of the late Marshall R. and Etta D. (Hicks) Ragan.
She was raised in Wayne County, Kentucky, and was a 1943 Wayne County High School graduate.
On March 8, 1946, she was united in marriage with Forrest J. "Fergie" Ferguson at Bethesda Baptist Church in Brownsburg, and he preceded her in death Oct. 16, 1999. This happy union of 53 years was blessed with daughters, Brenda, and twins, Karen and Kathy; sons, Jerry, Larry and Joe.
The family lived in Mooresville, Indiana and settled in Jefferson County in 1954. During World War II, Katie worked at the Allison plant in Indianapolis. She enjoyed helping her husband on the farm, was a devoted wife, homemaker, loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed working 15 years at the Madison Wal-Mart as a greeter.
She was a faithful member of the Wirt Baptist Church and had served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. Katie loved to raise flowers, especially daylilies, gardening, and quilting.
Katie will be missed by her daughters, Brenda L. Lowe of Greensburg, Karen (Gerald) Risk of Madison; sons, Jerry (Rose) Ferguson of Dupont, Indiana, Larry (Danna) Ferguson of Madison, Joe (Penny) Ferguson of Madison; grandchildren, David (Kelly), Christi (Shane), Sandi, Mark (Dawn), Melissa (John), Michael (Jamie), Matthew, Marcia, Maegan (Mark), Kathy (Bryon), Kevin (Elizabeth), Jeff (Annlena), Julie (Ross), Jaman (Joseph), Mary (Alex), Josh, and Sarah; 41-great grandchildren; brother, Rev. Bryan "Wally" Ragan (Sandy) of New Albany; sisters, Grace Recher of Lebanon, Virginia Doyle of New Concord, Kentucky, Nancy Smith of Cartersville, Georgia; brother in law, Elgie Sanders of Danville; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her father, Marshall R. Ragan; mother, Etta D. Hicks Ragan; beloved husband of 53 years, Forrest J. Ferguson; daughter, Kathy Ferguson, died December 24, 1951; sisters, Dolphine Starkey, Margie Ruetz, Lena Panyard, and Betty Ann Sanders; and son-in-law, Dale R. Lowe, died October 21, 2014.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 23 at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 321 Demaree Drive, Madison, and one hour prior to funeral services at the church. Katie's going home celebration service begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 24 at Wirt Baptist Church, 4773 N. 350 W., near Madison, with Pastor Troy Hedges officiating. Private interment will be at Dupont Cemetery.
