Samuel Oliver Bennett

Samuel Oliver Bennett, 91, of Westport, passed away at 1:05 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at Decatur County Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 24, 1926 in Columbia, Kentucky, the son of Oliver & Nora (Smith) Bennett. He was raised in Russell Springs, Kentucky, moved to Millhousen area in 1958 and he had lived in Westport the past 2 years. He retired from Reliance Electric in 1988 and was also a farmer and enjoyed raising cattle. Sam served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Union Flat Rock Baptist Church and the American Legion Post #129. He married Thelma Mae Crosby on September 13, 1947 in Franklin, Indiana and she preceded him in death April 8, 2003. He married Mary (Koger) Helms on October 16, 2005 in Westport and she survives. Other survivors include his daughters, Donna Ison of Columbus and Terri (Jeff) Prewitt of Seymour; his sons, David Bennett of Westport and Randy Bennett of North Vernon; his step-daughters, Jami Lea Helms and Jennifer Voris both of Westport; his step-sons, David Scott (Sharon) Helms, Daniel James (Marilyn) Helms both of Westport, Dennis Lee Helms of Beech Grove, Dale Edward (Sherri) Helms and Jace Robert (Carol) Helms both of Westport; his sister, Rachel Irvin of Cincinnati, Ohio; his brothers, Herbert Bennett of Edinburgh and Ernest Bennett of Russel Springs, Kentucky; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1st wife, Thelma Bennett; son, Jeffrey William Bennett; brother, Albert Russell Bennett and sister, Mildred Stapp. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Rev. Malvin McCullough, Rev. Tom Mattingly and Rev. Steve Malone officiating. Burial will follow at Union Flat Rock Cemetery with military graveside rites. The family will receive visitors on Friday, April 13, 2018 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or Union Flat Rock Church.
