Sr. Margaretta's Story
Sr. Margaretta Black, age 83 of the Srs. of St. Francis in Oldenburg, died Friday, September 1, 2017 at the convent. Born October 26, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois, she is the daughter of Hedwig (Nee: Poppe) and Milton Black. She entered the convent September 8, 1951 and made her final vows August 12, 1957. Sr. Margaretta taught elementary and high school in Ohio and Indiana for 13 years before spending the next 39 at Marian University in Indianapolis. While there, she served as a French Professor, Chaired the Language Department, was a Project Manager, Director of Study Abroad, Academic Dean and served on the Marian University Board of Trustees as secretary and later as a board member. Those who knew her described her as a gentle soul, purposeful, with a quick wit, a brilliant mind and loving personality. She loved the theater, opera's, country music and singing in the choir in addition to knitting, crocheting and cooking. Sipping a cup of hot tea while reading a French novel was a delightful treat she enjoyed. Sr. Margaretta is survived by cousins and is preceded in death by her parents. Visitation is Tuesday, September 5th, from 1 - 3 p.m. at the convent chapel. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m. with Rev. Bill Turner officiating.
