Text size

Veneita Sue (Hilderbrand) Barton, 78, of Greensburg, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born Nov. 10, 1938, in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of Harold and Bessie (Todd) Hilderbrand.

Veneita graduated in 1957 from Columbus North High School. On June 30, 1957, she married her sweetheart, William E. Barton, and he survives.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends. For nearly forty years, she was actively involved in the Women's Aglow Ministries and served in several different leadership roles, including Southern Indiana State Prayer Coordinator.

Veneita always had a heart for those who were hurting and spent countless hours counseling and mentoring women dealing with many different issues, including those in jail. She was always there to lend an ear and say a prayer. Proverbs 31 describes her: "She extends her hand to the poor; And she stretches out her hands to the needy. Strength and dignity are her clothing. She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also."

Veneita is survived by her husband, Bill, Greensburg; daughters, Connie (Bill) Meyerrose, Greensburg, Sally (Eric) Fromer, Elkhart, Linda (David) Crawley, Greensburg; son, John (Shelley) Barton, Greensburg; sister, Sharon Tanner, Henryville; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother, Grady; brothers-in-law, Dallas Barton, Terry Tanner; and two infant great-grandsons.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2 at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg. A Celebration of Life Service begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 3 at the funeral home, with Rev. Janet McGee officiating. Burial will follow at the Westport Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Heart of God Ministries, 8121 McLavery Way, Unit 207, Brownsburg, IN 46112.
