Virginia's Story

Virginia D. Arnold, 93, of Greensburg, passed away on December 17, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 6, 1924 in Martinsville, Indiana to Lewis and Lilian Dalka Dowdy. Virginia was a graduate of Gosport High School and Kokomo School of Business as a paralegal. She was a homemaker and had worked at Johnson Wholesale Foods and the Greensburg Daily News. She was a member of TOPS, Greensburg Christian Church, and a 25-year member of the 50s Homemakers Club.
Virginia was married to Joe S. Arnold on July 9, 1943 in Henderson, Kentucky, lived near Sturgis, KY then moved to Greensburg in 1970 where they owned and operated Arnold Spreading Service. She is survived by daughters Martha (Gaylord) Inman, Pleasantville, NJ; Kathy (Emmett) Roden, Chevy Chase, MD; Ginny (Bob) Whipple, Greensburg, and son Joe B. Arnold, Cloverdale; Grandchildren Beth Bullock, Bart (Cathy) Bullock, Atlantic City, NJ; Michelle (Andy) Grajales, Kenningston, MD; Joseph (Vonda) Arnold, Pittsboro; Wade (Kristen) Whipple and Matt Whipple, Greensburg; Lacey Speer and Gary Speer, Greensburg, and fifteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by sister-in-law Reiko Arnold, Morganfield, KY.
Over the past year she was lovingly cared for by caregivers Kim, Inga, Cathi, Katie and Chris. She had many friends and neighbors at September Place including Mary Lou and Verna.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Patricia Speer, granddaughter Lily Roden, parents, and sisters Betty Lou Dowdy and Coleen Schatz.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, from 10:00 am until the Celebration of her life at 2:00 pm. Pastor David Burnett will officiate. Burial will follow at the South Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Bread of Life Soup Kitchen, 700 Randall St., Greensburg, IN 47240.
