Dr. William James Culley, 89, of Indianapolis, who described himself as a father, scientist, dancer, inquisitor and lifelong learner, passed away on December 8, 2017 in The Lodge Assisted Living Facility.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, December 11, 2017 at Spirit of Joy Church with Pastor Mark Wilhelm officiating.
Dr. Culley was born in Peoria, Illinois to Thomas and Helen Culley on November 13, 1928. He graduated from Brimfield High School and served in the United States Army for 3 years.
He received his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from Bradley University, his PHD in Biochemistry from Purdue University, his Specialist Degree in Special Education from Indiana University, his Masters Degree in Public Health Administration from Indiana University, and taught Chemistry at IUPUI. Dr. Culley worked as the Assistant Superintendent of The Muscatatuck State Developmental Center for 33 years.
He enjoyed serving the community over the years as Chairman of Purdue Satellite Campus in Versailles, Chairman of Ripley County Red Cross, Historic Hoosier Hills Tourism Director, Chairman of The Board of Tyson Methodist Church, President of South Ripley Parent Teacher Association, Lions Club Member, Chairman of The Versailles Pumpkin Show, Chairman State of Indiana Tourism Committee, President of South Ripley Band Boosters, Chairman of Tyson Memorial Fund, Member of South Ripley High School Building Committee, and President and Website Manager of Continental Dance Club.
He married Bonnie Louise Young on May 2, 1960 in Versailles, Indiana. Out of that union came two daughters and two step-daughters.
He married Mary Williamson on July 19, 1991 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He is preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Helen Culley, wife Mary Williamson, step-daughter Starla Young, and grandson Paul Miller.
Dr. Culley is survived by two daughters Bonnie Lou Miller(James) of Noblesville and Connie Sue Culley(Steve) of Sunrise, Florida, one step-daughter Barbara Lynne Iceberg(George), one sister Patricia Anne Dvorak(David), 13 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
