Arthur "Art" Nieman, 88, of St. Paul, passed away Monday, March 14, 2016, at Select Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born Dec. 7, 1927, in Greensburg, the son of John H. and Agnes P. (Meyer) Nieman.
Art graduated from Greensburg High School in 1946. He was a lifetime resident of the area. He married Pauline Schwering on Aug. 18, 1953, and she survives.
He served with the US Army during the Korean War.
Art worked as a self-employed farmer his whole working life. He was a member of St. Vincent Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Blue River Valley Antique Power Association.
Art loved antique tractor pulling and was involved in tractor pulls for over 60 years. He loved farming. Art enjoyed spending time with little children and handing out gum to them.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Jean (Bill) Graham of New Palestine and Paul (Mary Jo) Nieman of Shelbyville; brothers, Maurice, Carl and John F. Nieman, all of Greensburg; sisters, Rose Marie Nieman and Betty Schneider, both of Greensburg; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 17 at Glenn E. George Funeral Home in St. Paul. A Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 18 at St. Vincent Catholic Church, Rev. Paul Landwerlen officiating. Burial will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery, after a graveside military service conducted by a local veteran's organization.
Memorials may be given to St. Vincent Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.
