C.W. "Bill" Soendlin, 78, of Greensburg, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017, at Decatur County Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 26, 1938, in Decatur County, Jackson Township, he was the son of Karl Soendlin and May (Bokelman) Richter.
The 1956 graduate of Napoleon High School married Janice Larrison on June 6, 1964, at the New Point Christian Church.
Bill worked 38 years for the Peoria & Eastern, NY Central, Penn Central, Conrail and CSX Railroad.
He served his country in the US Air Force from 1956 to 1964. He was a member of the American Legion Post 129 in Greensburg and the Retired Railroaders Group.
Bill enjoyed politics and served as the Salt Creek Township Trustee from 1978 to 1986 and was on the Rossburg Cemetery Board. Bill was a member of New Point Christian Church, where he was a past elder and deacon and the Greensburg Christian Church. He loved his church and was very active in missions.
He enjoyed bowling, was an avid Reds fan, loved railroading and was a lifelong Rail Buff. He and his wife loved to travel and have been to all 50 states plus Canada. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary by going on a cruise to Alaska. He was an active member of the Greensburg Senior Citizens and the Greensburg and Batesville YMCA .
Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janice Soendlin; sons, Deron (Rhonda) Soendlin of Germantown Hills, Illinois, David (Carrie) Soendlin of Greensburg and Dyar (Sheryl) Soendlin of Greensburg. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Katelynn (Camilo) Giraldo, Bradley Soendlin and Drew, Claire and Logan Soendlin; siblings, Richard (Rebecca) Soendlin of Indianapolis and Donna (Bill) Swigart of Rushville and several nieces and nephews. He will be truly missed by his family and friends.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27 at Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville and form 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 at New Point Christian Church. Funeral services begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the church with Mark Vice officiating. Burial will follow at Rossburg Cemetery with military graveside rites.
