Mary Grace Helms Bennett
Mary Grace Helms Bennett, 88, of Westport, passed away at 5:57 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at her residence. She was born on February 17, 1931 in New Castle, Indiana the daughter of Elmer Lee and Lelia B. (McLane) Koger. She was born in New Castle and raised in Westport. Graduated from Columbus High School in 1973 and was a member of the Rockcreek Baptist Church. She retired from the Decatur County Memorial Hospital in 1984. She married James R. Helms in Columbus, Indiana on July 27, 1947. He preceded her in death on July 31, 2004. She married Samuel Oliver Bennett in Westport on October 16, 2005. He preceded her in death on April 10, 2018. Mary is survived by her sons, David Scott (Sharon) Helms, Daniel James (Marilyn) Helms, Dale Edward (Sherry) Helms, Jace Robert (Carol) Helms all of Westport and Dennis Lee Helms of Beech Grove; her daughter, Jami Lea (Jenny) Helms of Westport; stepchildren, David Bennett of Westport, Randy (Paula) Bennett of North Vernon, Terri (Jeff) Prewitt of Seymour and Donna Ison of Columbus; her sister, Lucille Blauvelt of Columbus; 11 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; a son, Roger Grant Helms; a brother, Larry Koger; daughter-in-law, Kim Helms and brother-in-law, Leslie Blauvelt. Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 26, 2019 at the Indiana Veterans Cemetery in Madison, Indiana with Rev. Steve Malone and Rev. Malvin McCullough officiating. There will be no public visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice through the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home. Online condolences can be made to the family at

She was a very sweet lady. And Sam was a great man . Any time I would go with Donna Ison Bennett they always wanted us to eat. Down to earth country folk. I liked listening to her and Sams stories of themselves. And then it was come on you gotta eat. ❤️❤️

Mary made me feel loved the first time I met her. She always made me felt
Like I was part of the family. I loved her dearly. I will miss her. She was a great person.
